Granddaughter of Dominique Willem Berretty, Visits Villa Isola

The granddaughter of the first owner of Villa Isola, Josephine Berretty paid a visit to the Villa owned by her cousin’s grandfather, Dominique Willem Berretty, which is located in the UPI campus area Jalan Setiabudi No. 229 Bandung, Wednesday (07/04/2022). During her visit, Josephine was accompanied by her husband, Joop Heilijgers. Arriving at the campus, UPI was greeted by the Head of the UPI National Education Museum, Dr. Leli Yulifar, M.Pd and staff headed to the UPI rectorate office and were received by the UPI Chancellor, Prof. Dr. M. Solehuddin, M.Pd., MA and the Vice Chancellor for Research, Business, and Cooperation Prof. Dr. Bunyamin, M.Pd., MA in the office of the Chancellor of the Indonesian Education University.

During the meeting, Josephine Berretty and Joop Heilijgers revealed that this visit was part of their work in Bandung. “Last night we had a working meeting with our branch company in Bandung and this morning we are very happy to be able to visit the villa made by our predecessors” they said.

They also said that this was their second time visiting the UPI campus, “About twenty years ago we visited here and we can see a lot of changes that have taken place here, especially the new buildings that surround Villa Isola”.

On this occasion the Chancellor of UPI Prof. Dr. M. Solehuddin, M.Pd., MA also revealed that in the future Bumi Siliwangi will be returned to its original form and function. he said.

After a brief meeting with the Chancellor of UPI, Josephine Berretty and Joop Heilijgers were invited to tour the interior of Villa Isola by Prof. Dr. Bunyamin, M.Pd., MA and Dr. Leli Yulifar, M.Pd guided by R. Kurnia from Friends of Indonesian Heritage who is also a staff of the Indonesian Education Museum. For Josephine and Joop this was their first time touring inside Villa Isola, they expressed their admiration and luxury of the villa, especially when explained by the guide that the top floor was originally requested by DW Berretty to Prof. Schoemaker as the architect of Villa Isola to turn it into a rooftop swimming pool “Berretty is a futuristic person, what he wanted to do at that time that might seem strange (a rooftop pool) is now commonplace, we can see In modern hotels, a lot of swimming pools are built on the roof,” said Joop Heilijgers.

keep Berretty’s legacy alive. so that people can know and remember who Dominique Berretty is and the legacy she left behind”. At the end of their visit, Joop Heilijgers and Josephine Berretty plan to assist in printing the book Villa Isola, which the book will be handed over to all descendants of DW Berretty spread across Europe and hope to one day be able to visit and enjoy Berretty’s legacy directly in Bandung,” he concluded.
