Executive Summary
Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) actively contributes to sustainable urban development through comprehensive programs supporting arts, heritage, and sustainable practices. In 2025, UPI invested IDR 501.4 million in arts and heritage out of total expenditure of IDR 1,018 billion, representing significant commitment to cultural preservation and community development.
The university provides FREE public access to its historic buildings including Taman Bareti (the social heart of campus), library access after application, and permanent free access to all campus grounds. UPI operates FREE shuttle services (“Odong-odong”), provides student housing through UPI Property, prioritizes pedestrian access, and collaborates with local authorities on planning and development issues including affordable housing access.
Support of Arts and Heritage
🏛️ Public Access to Historic Buildings📰
UPI provides FREE public access to buildings and heritage landscapes of cultural significance, exemplified by Taman Bareti – the historic and social heart of the campus in Bandung, named after Dominique Bareti, a significant figure in Indonesian education history.
📚 Public Library Access🔗
UPI provides public access to its libraries, including books and publications, through its official platform. Access is granted to all after application, ensuring community members can benefit from university’s academic resources.
🎨 Museum and Gallery Access🔗
UPI provides public access to its museums, exhibition spaces, galleries, and works of art through paid admission. The National Education Museum and other exhibition spaces showcase educational history and cultural artifacts.
🌳 FREE Public Green Spaces📸
Taman Bareti serves as the historic and social heart of the UPI campus in Bandung. Named after Dominique Bareti, this open space provides permanent FREE access to all campus grounds for the public.
🎭 Public Cultural Performances▶️
In celebration of UPI’s 70th Dies Natalis, the university organized a traditional wayang golek cultural performance open to the public. UPI contributes to local arts through ad hoc annual public performances by university choirs, theatre groups, and orchestras.

UPI has officially launched the innovative “EduLaras Virtual Museum” – a research-based prototype designed to document and preserve local and regional cultural heritage such as folklore, traditions, language, and knowledge through digital technology.

UPI promotes sustainable commuting on its Bumi Siliwangi campus through the operation of five “Odong-odong” campus shuttle buses, and measures and sets targets for non-motorized and shared transport. The university actively promotes FREE shuttle services to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable transportation.

UPI promotes and allows telecommuting or remote working for employees as a matter of policy, reducing employee commuting and promoting a better work-life balance.

UPI, through its supporting unit UPI Property, provides affordable and well-managed student housing. The university evaluates affordable housing needs and actively provides housing solutions for students.

UPI prioritizes pedestrian access across its campus through thoughtfully designed pathways that separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic, creating a safe and accessible environment for walking.

UPI utilizes brownfield sites for new developments whenever possible. For instance, in development planning, the university prioritizes sites with previous building to minimize environmental impact and promote sustainable land use.
