SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS #13
Climate Action
Comprehensive report on UPI’s contribution to taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts through low-carbon energy, environmental education, and climate adaptation initiatives.
Executive Summary
Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) demonstrates strong commitment to climate action through low-carbon energy initiatives, comprehensive environmental education programs, and active collaboration with government and NGOs. In 2025, UPI generated 729 GJ of low-carbon energy from solar power installations, representing 2.8% of total university energy consumption of 26,332 GJ.
The university implements a Climate Action plan shared with local government and community groups, provides local education programs on climate change risks and mitigation, participates in cooperative planning for climate disasters at the local level, and collaborates with NGOs including BeCool Indonesia on climate adaptation initiatives. UPI actively supports local government in climate disaster risk early warning and monitoring.
Low Carbon Energy Use
β‘ Low-Carbon Energy MeasurementView Evidenceπ
UPI measures the amount of low-carbon energy used across the university through partial measurement systems. The university has information specifically about low-carbon energy generated by its solar power installations.
Energy Consumption Data (2025)
Solar Energy: UPI’s low-carbon energy comes specifically from solar power installations generating 729 GJ annually, demonstrating commitment to renewable energy sources.
Environmental Education Measures
π Local Climate Change EducationView Evidenceπ°
UPI, through its Faculty of Education (FIP UPI), is actively involved in local education and program development related to climate change. The university provides local education programs and campaigns on climate change risks, impacts, mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning for communities.
πΊοΈ University Climate Action PlanView Evidenceπ
The PPK Ormawa UKM LEPPIM UPI team actively and successfully implements a local, practical climate initiative called “Program Kampus Bebas Kendaraan Bermotor” (Motor Vehicle-Free Campus Program), shared with local government and community groups.
π¨ Co-operative Disaster PlanningView Evidenceπ
The university participates in cooperative planning (collaboration) with local government through formal agreements. UPI Sumedang Campus works with BPBD (Regional Disaster Management Agency) on climate change disaster planning that may include population displacement.
β οΈ Early Warning & Monitoring SupportView Evidenceπ
UPI Sumedang Campus formally supports the local government (BPBD Sumedang) in climate disaster/risk early warning and monitoring systems. This collaboration strengthens community resilience to climate-related hazards.
π€ NGO Collaboration on Climate AdaptationView Evidenceπ°
UPI collaborates with climate adaptation organizations through partnerships supported by BeCool Indonesia and PT Diwangkara Wihaya Enterprises, demonstrating multi-stakeholder approach to addressing climate challenges.
Commitment to Carbon Neutral University
π― Carbon Neutrality Target
UPI does not yet have a formal target date for achieving carbon neutrality according to Greenhouse Gas Protocols. However, the university actively implements various climate action initiatives including renewable energy generation, sustainable transportation, and climate education programs.
