These are the rules for applying for a visa for foreign students in Indonesia.

Indonesia is one of the countries that is a destination for foreign students from abroad. To be able to study in Indonesia, foreigners (OA) must have a student visa and a guarantor. Based on the Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia Number 36 of 2021, a guarantor is a person or corporation who is responsible for the existence and activities of OA while in Indonesia.

The guarantor plays an important role in the visa application process because, without it, visa applications cannot be submitted. The guarantor for foreign students can be individuals or educational institutions where they study in Indonesia.

“Student visa guarantors must first register at visa-online.imigrasi.go.id so that they can get a user ID and password. After that, the student visa application can be submitted on the same site,” explained the Sub-Coordinator of Public Relations of the Directorate General of Immigration, Achmad Nur Saleh.

“This student visa is included in the limited stay visa category, the index number is C316,” added Achmad.

The student visa application is submitted by the applicant electronically by attaching the following requirements:

  1. a letter of guarantee from the guarantor;
  2. a letter of recommendation for a study permit obtained from the ministry that administers government affairs in the field of higher education (for OA with individual guarantors; for OA with a guarantor in the form of an educational institution, it is enough to attach a statement of graduation for prospective foreign students)
  3. Nationality Passport which is valid and still valid: a minimum of 30 months for OA who will attend education for a maximum of two years; and a minimum of 18 months for those who will attend education for a maximum of one year.
  4. proof of having the cost of living for himself and/or his family while in the Indonesian Territory of at least USD 2000 (two thousand US dollars) per person in the form of savings except for educational scholarship programs financed by the Indonesian Government.

After the visa application is submitted, the guarantor or OA will receive an email containing the payment billing code number in IDR and USD. Billing in IDR can be paid through a SIMPONI-connected bank, while billing in USD can be paid at BRI/BNI/Mandiri tellers. Based on the provisions, the visa will be issued no later than five working days.
