Enhancing Research and Publication Quality: A Collaborative Approach with Elsevier’s ScienceDirect for Indonesian Universities

On Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia received a visit request for a meeting with the Elsevier Asia Pacific team in a collaborating program with the Directorate General of Higher Education, Research and Technology (DIKTI).

The collaborating program is ScienceDirect (SD) for six universities in Indonesia: Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), and Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). The program is scheduled to run from October 2023 to September 2024.

The parties from Elsevier who attended this meeting were Johan Jang as Customer Success Manager and Irwan Gafar as Senior Account Manager Southeast Asia. Welcomed by Prof. Dr. H. M. Solehuddin, M.Pd., M.A. as Rector of UPI, along with the Secretary of the University, Head of Library, Directorate of International Affairs, and Head of Library Materials Acquisition Division.

This meeting delivered ScienceDirect utilization report from Elsevier, a university publication performance report (including publication output, citations, and relevant metrics), a plan to form/participate in a team to increase the quantity and quality of UPI publications, and a plan to make a case study on research development in Indonesia.

In a presentation titled “Partnering to Support you: ScienceDirect Report for DIKTI Consortium”, Johan Jang delivered the first database solution for SD usage awareness. “As of October 2023, established a consortium dedicated to SD specifically for SD freedom collection.”

Elsevier has several plans to support universities through implementation including the three phases. The first phase is SD Awareness and Utilization with an agenda of meetings with several universities, webinars on SD, seminars on SD and research topics, and video tutorials. Then, the second phase is SD and Enriching Research Quality by individualizing web pages created to support each university. Webinars and on-site events on trending topics in research communities, and marketing collateral. The last phase plans to learn more about SD and Research Publication by holding webinars on research publication topics, online quizzes, on-site events, marketing collateral, and program evaluation discussions.

This program expects to improve how they can develop research, know how to use their research or thesis and improve research quality and production.
